Edition # 11- Editorial

Hello everyone, Happy New Year(belated) and welcome back to college.
We at the Mag club sure hope you all had an eventful vacation; S.I.E.S GST was brimming with activity throughout our absence.

The first week saw a Short Term Training Program organized by the college along with the PPT dept. on “Effect of Technology on Environmental Conservation” and what an eye opener it was.

We celebrated "MAITRITVA" – the alumni meet of all the batches of our college, it was an initiative by our brand new Principal Madam and our teachers. It was heartening to see such a good response by all the ex students SIES GST including the pioneers of the Magazine Committee (the ones who started it for us).

Two well known companies came for placements and many deserving candidates got selected, so CONGRATULATIONS to them all and all the best to the rest of the B.E. students.
The year has just begun and all this just goes to show that there are loads more in store for all of us.

On behalf of all of you and the entire Magazine/Campus Buzz Team we warmly welcome Dr. Alka Mahajan, Principal, SIESGST and wish her all the best.

-The EDs

Edition # 11 - An Injection Can Change Your Life - Varun Goenka SE

Washington D.C: Desiree Jennings ,a native of Ashburn,Virginia is a 27 year old who would pass as a rather attractive woman but that is something she might just have 'learnt' to cherish because in August 2009 something unexpected happened to her.

While preparing for an 8 km marathon she thought of having a flu shot or an influenza vaccine injection and did just that. She got herself injected with the vaccine at some local grocery store and claims to have suffered neural breakdown some 10 days later. She was earlier training to be a Washington Redskins cheerleader and this certainly did not help in any way.Her condition was such that she could ‘walk’ only through convoluted movements and suffered erratic seizures and fits ,even ‘blackouts’.She had difficulty with routine tasks as typing something on a keyboard or holding something in her hands. But she could walk backwards normally and run forward normally. While running she could speak normally. But when static and trying to eat food ,she would involuntarily regurgitate.Doctors call her condition Dystonia.By late December, she started regaining control over her muscles and her movements and could perform routine activities quite well. However, remembering her previous condition actually causes her to behave the way she did when she was unwell.

Doctors say her condition was the result of multiple toxicity assault from the vaccine injected into her that caused vaccine injuries to her.She developed psychogenic disorders soon there after. This is what is claimed to have damaged her nervous system. Dystonia is considered a form of autism.

A search string Desiree Jennings on You Tube will most probably direct to videos on this topic.

We can all learn from this episode that aesthetic appeal is really temporary and bad things can happen to us in ways unimaginable. Also, we should not taunt or jeer people with deformities.

Edition # 11- Winning Against All Odds Adhithya Krishnamachari (BE IT)

Mumbai-the suicide capital' shouted one of the newspaper headlines,'The 3Idiots effect' said another, every news channel and paper trying to use as many catchy and attention grabbing slogans as possible .Well,it was quite obvious that mumbai was in the news for all wrong reasons following the recent spate of suicides in the city especially by young children and teens.
All this makes us wonder about the immense stress these children went through, were their problems so abstruse that they couldn't figure out any solutions and perhaps decided that the only way to solve their issues was to give up on life itself? Do we feel that it is only our problems that are unsolvable or for that matter is it a perception that it is only us who face problems while the remaining mankind lives in an utopia.Well, after reading the blog of ex army-man Rajat Mishra,I figured out that the answers to the above questions is simply a big 'NO'
Wondering, who Rajat Mishra is? well,he is currently a student in 2nd year of PGP at IIM Ahmedabad. No,he is not your typical nerd who studied for 15 hrs a day and made it to an IIM. The story of this Fauji goes much beyond winning battles on the field, it shows the victory of sheer human determination and spirit.
Rajat Mishra was from an army background. The fact that his dad was a valiant officer in the army inspired the young Rajat to become one too.He got into the prestigious NDA and was appointed as a Lieutenant (Lt) in the army. So,things were going quite well for the young Rajat Mishra.
But, life as they say comes without warnings. On 22 Dec 2004 Rajat met with a terrible accident which led to the amputation of his right arm which unfortunately was his working arm.Life really came to a standstill and all rajat's dreams of being in thick of the action in the army ,well, came to a grinding halt.
But, the brave Lieutenant wasn't prepared to accept what life had left him with. He, decided to fight back like a true soldier. The first step in his fightback was to perform basic activities like writing, eating etc.with his left arm and soon with his tenacity Rajat managed to not only write but also drive with only his left arm
But,this was only the beginning of the journey of a true winner. With a good support system consisting of his sister and some old friends he decided to take the plunge into the world of MBA competitive exams. He appeared for CAT and GMAT. His determination paid of and he got selected into India's most prestigious B-school IIM,Ahmedabad and also ISB, Hyderabad but he chose the former. Now,he is doing second year of his PGP course at IIM-A.
The story of this man goes a long way in emphasizing that no amount of obstacles can ever a deter a determined person from what he/she wants to achieve. A lesson which every kid and youngster can learn from Rajat-ji is to
‘Never give up on life, and life will never give up on you’.

Edition # 10 - Editorial -Deepak S.[Guest Editor] (BE IT)

Hello folks,
With a fortnight of festivities behind us, we now enter the latter(and more hectic) half of the semester. I hope, by now, the freshmen are acquainted with the campus and each other.
In a summer which has seen soccer clubs spend obscene amounts of money on their recruits, we engineers have found jobs hard to come by.

However, most final year students have decided to make the most of this opportunity by pursuing further studies or appearing for competitive exams. GATE,CAT, and GRE are the buzzwords all around. Admirable indeed!

On a lighter note, as a final year student, I guess the juniors look up to us (hopefully). And there's one thing they might want to know it's about that one thing I really like after these years. Surprisingly, the answer came easily enough. It's not the swanky infrastructure, or the huge canteen, not the cool hangouts nearby and not even the cows in the campus. That one thing is the people. Everyone, the students, the teachers even the staff that make this place as exciting as it is. Moral of the story; Enjoy your life. Studies are important, but no textbook forbids you from having fun. Make memories and live them , this is the time to do it and you could not be in a better place for it. Make sure by the time you reach your final years you carry a strong sense of nostalgia. So wake up, shake a leg, and live the moment.
Warm regards,
Deepak S.(Guest Editor)
