Edition # 11- Editorial

Hello everyone, Happy New Year(belated) and welcome back to college.
We at the Mag club sure hope you all had an eventful vacation; S.I.E.S GST was brimming with activity throughout our absence.

The first week saw a Short Term Training Program organized by the college along with the PPT dept. on “Effect of Technology on Environmental Conservation” and what an eye opener it was.

We celebrated "MAITRITVA" – the alumni meet of all the batches of our college, it was an initiative by our brand new Principal Madam and our teachers. It was heartening to see such a good response by all the ex students SIES GST including the pioneers of the Magazine Committee (the ones who started it for us).

Two well known companies came for placements and many deserving candidates got selected, so CONGRATULATIONS to them all and all the best to the rest of the B.E. students.
The year has just begun and all this just goes to show that there are loads more in store for all of us.

On behalf of all of you and the entire Magazine/Campus Buzz Team we warmly welcome Dr. Alka Mahajan, Principal, SIESGST and wish her all the best.

Edition # 11 - An Injection Can Change Your Life - Varun Goenka SE

Washington D.C: Desiree Jennings ,a native of Ashburn,Virginia is a 27 year old who would pass as a rather attractive woman but that is something she might just have 'learnt' to cherish because in August 2009 something unexpected happened to her.

While preparing for an 8 km marathon she thought of having a flu shot or an influenza vaccine injection and did just that. She got herself injected with the vaccine at some local grocery store and claims to have suffered neural breakdown some 10 days later. She was earlier training to be a Washington Redskins cheerleader and this certainly did not help in any way.Her condition was such that she could ‘walk’ only through convoluted movements and suffered erratic seizures and fits ,even ‘blackouts’.She had difficulty with routine tasks as typing something on a keyboard or holding something in her hands. But she could walk backwards normally and run forward normally. While running she could speak normally. But when static and trying to eat food ,she would involuntarily regurgitate.Doctors call her condition Dystonia.By late December, she started regaining control over her muscles and her movements and could perform routine activities quite well. However, remembering her previous condition actually causes her to behave the way she did when she was unwell.

Doctors say her condition was the result of multiple toxicity assault from the vaccine injected into her that caused vaccine injuries to her.She developed psychogenic disorders soon there after. This is what is claimed to have damaged her nervous system. Dystonia is considered a form of autism.

A search string Desiree Jennings on You Tube will most probably direct to videos on this topic.

We can all learn from this episode that aesthetic appeal is really temporary and bad things can happen to us in ways unimaginable. Also, we should not taunt or jeer people with deformities.

Edition # 11- Winning Against All Odds Adhithya Krishnamachari (BE IT)

Mumbai-the suicide capital' shouted one of the newspaper headlines,'The 3Idiots effect' said another, every news channel and paper trying to use as many catchy and attention grabbing slogans as possible .Well,it was quite obvious that mumbai was in the news for all wrong reasons following the recent spate of suicides in the city especially by young children and teens.
All this makes us wonder about the immense stress these children went through, were their problems so abstruse that they couldn't figure out any solutions and perhaps decided that the only way to solve their issues was to give up on life itself? Do we feel that it is only our problems that are unsolvable or for that matter is it a perception that it is only us who face problems while the remaining mankind lives in an utopia.Well, after reading the blog of ex army-man Rajat Mishra,I figured out that the answers to the above questions is simply a big 'NO'
Wondering, who Rajat Mishra is? well,he is currently a student in 2nd year of PGP at IIM Ahmedabad. No,he is not your typical nerd who studied for 15 hrs a day and made it to an IIM. The story of this Fauji goes much beyond winning battles on the field, it shows the victory of sheer human determination and spirit.
Rajat Mishra was from an army background. The fact that his dad was a valiant officer in the army inspired the young Rajat to become one too.He got into the prestigious NDA and was appointed as a Lieutenant (Lt) in the army. So,things were going quite well for the young Rajat Mishra.
But, life as they say comes without warnings. On 22 Dec 2004 Rajat met with a terrible accident which led to the amputation of his right arm which unfortunately was his working arm.Life really came to a standstill and all rajat's dreams of being in thick of the action in the army ,well, came to a grinding halt.
But, the brave Lieutenant wasn't prepared to accept what life had left him with. He, decided to fight back like a true soldier. The first step in his fightback was to perform basic activities like writing, eating etc.with his left arm and soon with his tenacity Rajat managed to not only write but also drive with only his left arm
But,this was only the beginning of the journey of a true winner. With a good support system consisting of his sister and some old friends he decided to take the plunge into the world of MBA competitive exams. He appeared for CAT and GMAT. His determination paid of and he got selected into India's most prestigious B-school IIM,Ahmedabad and also ISB, Hyderabad but he chose the former. Now,he is doing second year of his PGP course at IIM-A.
The story of this man goes a long way in emphasizing that no amount of obstacles can ever a deter a determined person from what he/she wants to achieve. A lesson which every kid and youngster can learn from Rajat-ji is to
‘Never give up on life, and life will never give up on you’.

Edition # 10 - Editorial -Deepak S.[Guest Editor] (BE IT)

Hello folks,
With a fortnight of festivities behind us, we now enter the latter(and more hectic) half of the semester. I hope, by now, the freshmen are acquainted with the campus and each other.
In a summer which has seen soccer clubs spend obscene amounts of money on their recruits, we engineers have found jobs hard to come by.

However, most final year students have decided to make the most of this opportunity by pursuing further studies or appearing for competitive exams. GATE,CAT, and GRE are the buzzwords all around. Admirable indeed!

On a lighter note, as a final year student, I guess the juniors look up to us (hopefully). And there's one thing they might want to know it's about that one thing I really like after these years. Surprisingly, the answer came easily enough. It's not the swanky infrastructure, or the huge canteen, not the cool hangouts nearby and not even the cows in the campus. That one thing is the people. Everyone, the students, the teachers even the staff that make this place as exciting as it is. Moral of the story; Enjoy your life. Studies are important, but no textbook forbids you from having fun. Make memories and live them , this is the time to do it and you could not be in a better place for it. Make sure by the time you reach your final years you carry a strong sense of nostalgia. So wake up, shake a leg, and live the moment.
Warm regards,
Deepak S.(Guest Editor)

Edition # 10 - Fourth Dimension -Adarsh Nair (SE COMPS)

It's funny how humans try and find temporary happiness, ephemeral solace in so many things - art, love, leisure, music - anything to keep the days passing by. It's only some of us who seek and understand true beauty - true beauty in the form of something everlasting, something eternal, unaffected and untouched by time, something that stays with us for as long as we live, and beyond our own lives. Beauty is not confined to an object, to a solid form that rests in front of our eyes, absorbing and reflecting light to form the three dimensions that we live in. It is a feeling that goes beyond our dimensions, it is the thought that lingers into the fourth. It is not the look of a fair maiden but the look of a lover that sets his eyes upon her, that makes her beauty true and wholesome. It is not the glow of your skin but the scars on your palms that are etched into you forever, that reform your pains which stay even after you are long gone. It is not the love you feel for someone when they reach their hand out to you, it is the divine feeling of being able to hold their hand forever, even after your hand is no more.

Anything that goes beyond time, that flows alongside the rivers of eternity, has true beauty. Anything that time can touch yet not effect..is true beauty, is true immorality, and it is for those feelings, those sensations that we should live, and not for the petty joys of a material world.

Edition # 10 - “BE” THE BEST - Hari Menon (BE IT)

“TE(Third Year Engineering)…” I said when asked the year I was in by the lady in the college office and the next thing I knew I had got a good slap on the back of my head.”Dude you are in BE(Final Year Engineering),u lost somewhere?” came a voice. It was my friend sounding like a perfect college student with a sarcastic smile on his which meant only one thing which was that this incident is going to spread like wildfire in our friend circle.

I corrected myself and gave him a reluctant smile and got out of the office still with the pathetic smile still on my face but with a feeling of pride and superiority because yes indeed I am in BE!!!!!!.

Being the seniormost in any institution brings in its own advantages. The juniors suddenly develop a sense of respect for you which any human being would appreciate without questioning. Then there is the “we have been through all this” factor which is mostly shown off by advising certain tricks of survival to juniors which probably you have never done yourself. Also you need to check your actions as you don’t want to look ‘cheap’ in front of your juniors and that would not be so ‘cool’.

But apart from all this BE also marks a period of transition from being a vagabond in your own life to a mature individual with atleast a modicum of maturity. You finally start to understand what the word ‘career’ is, which also ultimately becomes the central topic in many discussions, everyone trying desperately to inculcate a mature image of oneself in the other person’s mind. For the first time in 4 years of engineering people try to write some programs on their own which was looked upon as antediluvial concept which nerds do.You start multi tasking with many preparing for competitive exams and future courses, the technical project that you are supposed to do and the regular subjects ofcourse that is when it strikes you, “ohh so this is what they meant when they said multitasking in proccessors which was hard to digest a year ago”.

BE is also the time when nostalgia is at its peak. There is an inherent feeling of hollowness within everyone that this would be the last year of their much coveted college years. The friends who were special suddenly are extra special .You start enjoying every moment. And ofcourse you get a flash on your face almost everyday, yes you guessed it right ‘photos’,photography becomes your second proffesion(assuming engineering to be the first) with people clicking photos or pics on every possible occasion with a standard dialogue on their lips “who knows may be we don’t get to do this again”.

On the flip side there is an excitement, for you are about to enter the real world the ‘bitter world’ and topping the agenda on the excitement list would be money factor. Many would get a job and start earning which means no more begging for an extra hundred in front of your parents.

Standing in a walkalator at the starting point moving forward you want to go back but cannot that is where you are in BE, starting point of a new life moving ahead though you want to stall the time you cannot, all you have is a bag of memories with you so why not move with a smile because after all by then you understand one thing………………………”BE” the best.

Edition # 10 -Michael and Me -Karen Aranha (BE PPT)

Everyone has something or the other to say about him. Good and bad comments keep flowing in. I was a little kid when this man came to India to perform. I was too little to understand the hoopla behind it all.

I personally enjoyed all his songs and was delighted every time they played the video of”THRILLER" on TV (which was rare with all the new artists bombarding us with their "Talent”). I was introduced to his music by my dad who still has a video cassette of The Jackson 5 safely kept in the drawer.

It was just another day in June and I was getting ready for another day at my internship when I read on a Hindi news channel something about the King of Pop. I didn't pay any heed to it and was too worried about missing my bus to notice.

An hour at the workplace and I am greeted with a message from a friend saying” HAPPY CHILDREN'S DAY, KING OF POP RIP". I am shell shocked and frantically text my friend back asking for an explanation, only to get a rude awakening in the form of a confirmation of MJ's death.

Unable to believe my eyes, I log onto my most trusted website Google and see exactly what I was so afraid of. My mind tells me” Yes, HE IS DEAD." My work is a blur, my mind is cluttered and my ears can hear a medley of "Heal the world, Thriller, Bad, Smooth Criminal..." I wanted to cry but tears never came, not then at least.

The days after saw me reading articles after articles on him. TV channels had unending tribute messages and celebrities talking endlessly about Michael "The Phenomenon, The Man, The Legend". Then came his memorial service, it did to me what the news channels couldn’t. It made me realize that even though I didn’t know this man personally there was something about him that made him CONNECT. Connect not only to me but also to so many millions the world over. It also made me feel for his family and most of all, it made me cry. I wept bitterly; there was a sense of void which couldn’t be filled.

I then became obsessed with everything related to him. I had to read every article having his name, every music video that was aired, every MJ special I watched with the enthusiasm and obedience of a 7 yr old, even to the point that I tried my very best on contests by an RJ friend and won one contest. I jumped up and down when I came to know I won, I shook my mom from her sleep. I went berserk.

One evening there was a Top 40 MJ Videos Special on VH1 on account of Michael's birth anniversary and David Gest was the presenter. I saw all those videos that I knew by heart all over again only to remind myself how ahead of his times Michael Jackson was. I mean look at "EARTH SONG" the video is a reminder to Save Our PLANET and NOW is the time.

I am not going to delve into his personal life because too much has been said already. My heart refuses to believe that a man who had so much love for everyone (parents, friends and his children) would do horrid things to someone else’s kid.

He was a benevolent personality is what I believe. I guess I will never fully know how much he meant to people, most of all his family and kids. I m not even sure if I will ever truly understand how he has impacted me. His songs have been an emotional rollercoaster; they do to me what Indian family dramas fail to. They make me feel. Make me feel every emotion that there is.

MICHAEL JACKSON always makes me want to be a better human being.

Guess Michael that's THE WAY YOU MAKE ME and many others FEEL.

Edition # 9 - Editorial

Happy Friendship Day to one and all from the Campus BuZz team and a warm welcome to our newly admitted FEs. We do hope you all enjoy your precious 4 years with us. Last academic year was a year of many firsts for Campus BuZz.It was last year that the thought of getting a college fortnightly out (for all of us to read and contribute) came up. Some of us were excited, many others skeptical but we decided to give it a try, it had an amazing response. Thus, began our journey to write and get literary geniuses to pen down their thoughts and rest as we say is HISTORY. This year we would like a bigger show of support in the form of your ideas. Constructive criticism is always welcome too.
Without taking the fun out of reading the rest, We would also like to wish you all "A VERY HAPPY RAKSHA BANDHAN"

Edition # 9-Leaving College Behind-By Nikhil Nair(EX BE)

It’s not been very long since I left college, in fact I have not even left college fully yet! Despite that, when I was asked to write on how it feels to have left college, I agreed instantly and pondered later. All of two nights I spent scratching my head, searching for the right words to express what I was feeling. No sooner did I begin to pen down feeling good about leaving, I had a fresh wave of dismay at leaving and vice versa. As with everything in life, leaving college too had its fair share of pluses and minuses.
On the one hand, finishing college meant taking control of the rudder, and steering in new directions in terms of a job or a new college environment, new friends and new experiences, while on the other, it meant leaving behind the carefree “college days”, company of fond friends and comfort zones.
After the final paper was handed in at the final exam a friend turned to the student behind him and said “That’s how it’s done!” This remark marked the curtain call on our life in SIES GST. It brought on a sudden loss of direction. What had become our habit of returning to college after a month-long vacation was now replaced by a void. This feeling, a lot of my batch mates echoed as “abhi kya?” However before this void could become crippling, thoughts of future plans -be it joining the Company that recruited us, or applying/flying abroad for further education- mitigated that sense of loss.
Just as Nature demands adapting, I too am now settled in to this uninspiring lifestyle, listlessly moving from day to day. Right now the wait is for the results, after that a wait for the Company to call and then a wait for something else until a routine is established. It is only the wait that is killing, the moment something to do comes up, all that will change.
No matter what I end up moving on to, I can be certain of one thing; it’ll never be like life in SIES GST.

Edition # 9-My Friend-By Kiran Rane (TE EXTC)

Exams were finally over and the vacations had just begun, and so had the rains. Cozying up in my favorite spot in the balcony I was enjoying my coffee feeling every bit like the models in one of their ads, the only difference was that the background views weren’t as beautiful, there were flies all over. I could see the sewer overflowing on the road, and someone shouting and quarreling with the society manager because his walls had leakage problems again this season. So I was looking just about everywhere trying to spot something more interesting and it was then that I spotted the love of my life-not 1 but 3 pups huddled together on the footpath. I rushed outside and approached them cautiously, fearing that their mom would spring out of nowhere and chase me away. It was then that someone told me that their mum hadn’t been seen for 3 days. I could see it their eyes that they were hungry-both for food and love.
And so began our friendship, just like every other friendship begins-a little apprehensive at first, but as time passed, they had no fear of me and would wait for me to come down every evening, and if I didn’t go someday, the next day I could see the look of “why didn’t you come ?!We missed you.” Puppy eyes I tell you! They didn’t wait just for the food but also for the company. They never complained when I had no food for them. All they wanted was a pat on their head and some silly pampering. Their mother never returned. Sadly one died in an accident while I was away, and one simply vanished. So now it was just the two of us. Shortly a dog loving family from my society who had another dog adopted the pup.
It’s been 2 years now. She’s a well behaved and well groomed dog, walking straight up like the other pedigreed dogs, but whenever she sees me she leaps up to me and licks me all over. And though no words are ever spoken between us, we communicate with eyes and the joy I feel with this furry friend of mine is beyond words.

Edition # 9-The night, The merc and The dent-Compiled by Kaustubh Labhe(TE EXTC)

It was cloudy that night. Eddie had to go out. It was his ‘promotion’ party that night. Eddie was promoted to a senior post in his multinational company. A plush apartment and a luxurious merc were given to him by his company. His face lightened with the newly success that he had acquired. His tux shining, royal black, so was his merc. He stepped out of his house. It had started pouring. He looked at his merc then looked up, “damn this rain…” He sat inside the car, carefully shut the doors and turned on the air conditioner. He slid a C.D in and took off.
The street lights weren’t working. It was tough for Eddie to drive like this. Eddie tried looking outside the window. It was dark. No sign of humans. There weren’t any other vehicles as well. “If this thing breaks down here, then I am doomed”, he thought. He passed by a slum. Few children were playing in the rain. Looking at them he smiled to himself. He felt proud. Huh, a Mercedes really makes one proud. He felt lucky that night. He was on the other side of the one inch thick glass window. He stepped on the accelerator trying to ‘show off’. Suddenly he heard a thud. Something had hit his car. “Shit”. He took of his coat and stepped out. It was a stone that had hit his merc. He looked around and saw a little boy standing almost a yard far. He had no cover from the rain, umbrella, coat nothing. Eddie walked towards him, slapped him and lifted him by his collar. “You pest, you ruined my car, my new car.” He threw him on the ground. The boy coughed. “Sorry sir, I didn’t mean it”. Eddie was in no mood to listen to any apologies. He asked the boy to take him to his father. “You will have to repay the damages, bloody ‘bhikari’”. “Where is your dad”? The boy pointed his finger towards a tree. A weak man was lying under it. “There’s my father. He is unwell. Nobody was willing to stop for helping me so I did this”, the boy said with teary eyes. Eddie stood still, ashamed, weak himself. The worry about the dent on his car had vanished. He dropped the boy and his father to a nearby hospital in his new merc.
Next day one of his colleague asked Eddie about the dent on his car.
Eddie smiled and replied, “Dude, it’s my promotion gift from God”.

Edition # 9-Undead Intimacy By Vignesh Iyer (BE CE)

Oh little sunshine from the unseen brink,
The brink of unknown to swallow my fear,
The fear of unborn for the sanctity,
The fear of undead for the vice.

It has been ages knowing the light,
The light of unknown wisdom,
Very wisdom of the concealed memory,
Rotten memory of my victims.

The immortality is such a grievous curse,
A Curse of lust and beauty,
Of monotony and bizarre thoughts,
Of Peace-Mar.

Ah, the hankering of speckled Moon,
Brings down a beat on my arctic heart,
The warm air caressing me soft,
Such a comfort, such repose.

Every single day pass like blight,
In silence I live in silence I hunt,
Silence is the only secret shame that haunts,
For light looks at me and always taunts.

I love, I hate, I sing, I dance,
As I was before the re-birth,
I am the nature’s son,
Caressed by the mother earth.

Fill my vein and you would be my beloved,
For then you would feel my heart,
Love me just for a while...can’t you?
For later I would have another lover.

So am I too evil?
All this love is to hear your brittle neck fracture,
My love is a torment,
and You sure would pleasure the pain.

Am I not a creation to me marveled at?
Am I not so special for you?
Won’t you give me droplets of blood?
And that too few?

A little taste of you,
And I will whisper the last words,
For your flesh,
As I love you.

Edition # 8 - A LOOK INTO YOUR EYES… By Medha Shanbag (SE CE)

A tree that had long withered
Severed, forgotten how to blossom
But a look, a vent to everything
Everything that was silent
Silent, buried deep within.....
And out gushes a Furore...

A furore
Of pain, of hurt, of dainty denied emotions
Love, hatred, anger, disgust,
Looking upto lost ambitions,
Of fear of reigniting frozen flames,
Scared they will devour,
What little still remains dear.....

Another look and I smile...
Even in pain through the tears,
Smile...for being loved for what I am,
Rather than for what I am expected to be...
Smile for being liberated,
From the golden cage I was in.

Alive was my body but gone was my soul,
Far away from where I was,
But I smile for now I live...
For you brought me love.....my life!!!

A look into your eyes,
Those enigmatic eyes of thine...
Lets me breathe...
Urging...egging me on to smile
To let go, to forgive and to live.

I smile,
For a look into your eyes
Its all I want
And all I will need
When I see my reflection,
When I see a glimpse of me...!!!

Edition # 8 - One Last Time By -Gokul Shankar (TE IT)

I walked with my best friends across the campus, towards my class, my final year engineering class. The hour hand at the watch said it was ten minutes past 4 and there was not even a single trace of any life in the college except for us three me and my best pals.
Another ten steps and there was our class with the doors shut! Had a wish that the time stopped at that very moment but it never happened the second ticked heavily and we opened the doors of the class for one last time.
Wished I cud ask my teacher. "May I come in "and wanted to hear her shout, "You late again, no attendance." But there was no one there, just empty desks and we three, looking at the walls and the desks all empty with quotes we wrote and the classroom where the torture classes were held and the last benches where we had fun. Hiding from the teachers, pleading for attendance. Million memories rolled like a movie into our minds and there was complete silence for a moment and we smiled!!
The entire class was still there alive the last benchers sleeping, the gals chatting amongst themselves. Hari (trying to be creative) sitting besides me, cribbing about something Aditya (topper of our class) sitting on first bench taking down notes, and Teja (thinking that a girl will someday smile back) smiling at the babes, Ajin (wannabe) trying to talk to the gals and we laughing about something of the other, me occasionally scribbling something on my notepad, making some sketches or poetry.
Vineeth (bird-watcher) asked me to look outside and I without even a word looked outside it was an unspoken communication. Shameen (mentally unstable) pinged me and I, with the same enthu looked outside but today there was no one there just the deserted corridor and I could see the IT department at the end.
"Roll number 07..........” "Roll number 07............Gokul....u sleeping again........".
"Ok fine............. roll number 08". "......present ma'm............ ". "You sleep dear...!!!No attendance for you......... "
Wanted to attend one last lecture but this time there was no one to take that last lecture and there was that door open and we wished all the time to run away to bunk. But this time it wasn’t one last time one last time attended the class with no one.
JUST WE THREE…..

Edition # 8 -“The India of my dreams.” By Nikhil Nair

(As expressed by a child of the slums)
As a child we always dream of fantastic places with fairies and all, but my dreams were about school and my life there. There are no fairy-godmothers in this one.

I was walking up to my school and in the place of small thatched rooms stood a solid building. My school had a solid roof and a tiled floor throughout the corridor. My room had solid wooden chairs in various colors! There were fans, lights that worked! And my teacher… boy she was the most different of all. She wore no stern expression; instead she had a welcoming look on her face. That calm and benign look kept me at ease.

The park nearby that had just one slide, a stench and a lot of filth, now had become a wonderful playground. Soft grass, benches, the open gutter was nowhere in sight! I played for what seemed like ages. It felt as though my life had turned around.

I would return home to my mother, and I found Papa there as well! He said he did not have to work overtime any more. He said that I would finally get those books I wanted and that toy car that I said Rajesh had! And guess what! Mama was making rotis for dinner; I had never had rotis when there were no special occasions. And a spanking shiny ‘fridge in the kitchen, packed with pastries and chocolates! Wow, this was it; this was where I wanted to be all my life.

Good schools, good playgrounds, good food at home, brand new books, toys, everything in one day! Was this a dream?

Unfortunately it was, now as I look back, I certainly wish that my childhood had been like that. I certainly wish that that were the country I was living in. I certainly wish that that were MY INDIA!

Edition # 8 - Melody Of Menace By Vignesh Iyer (TE CE)

This day was expected,
After all those persistent warning,
She just let it be,
Her zits are so visible now,
She could have avoided it,
By the time the fluid were formed.

The germs were never this perceptible before,
They have taken the place for granted;
Little had she shook herself then,
And destroyed each one of them,
Maybe she would have lived long.

Now she started to spew things,
And even put our life to menace.
All that barfs are still out,
Unclean!!

My sympathy for her,
Seeing her so green,
Her temperature so high!!

My children,
Stay away from her,
The germs have sucked her well,
And already trying to reach you.

All the smoking,
Has harmed her further,
Those ruthless things!!

They are the monsters of her creation;
Her humble nature has defined her end.

My blistering rays couldn’t help her;
They already shielded themselves from me.

Now I can only pray for her a better end,
Then to sight a corpse revolving amid you.

Now, Let Me shine for you my child.
